Destroyer HMS CAMPBELTOWN. 27th March 1942 - a pitch-dark night over St. Nazaire, France. The specially prepared British destroyer "Campbeltown" (formerly USS Buchanan, built 1919) goes up the Loire under full steam flying the German flag. With small explosions the Campbeltown runs aground in front of the dry dock of the port of St. Nazaire, precisely where the Tirpitz will later be repaired. The crew are taken prisoner and German officers go aboard to investigate. 9 hours later the Campbeltown, which is totally full of explosives, blows up and causes serious damage to the dock. She was thus the largest ever time bomb, the Trojan horse of the Second World War.
